The Ministry of Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia reinforced its international cooperation in the fields of forestry and environmental management through a bilateral meeting between Vice Minister of Forestry Rohmat Marzuki and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) Executive Director Inger Andersen at the UNEP Office in Belém, Brazil, on Sunday (November 10, 2025), as part of the COP30 UNFCCC conference activities.

During the meeting, Vice Minister Marzuki expressed appreciation for UNEP’s continued support across Indonesia’s environmental initiatives.

He emphasized that the collaboration between Indonesia and UNEP, which was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in October 2024, serves as a crucial foundation for strengthening partnership following Indonesia’s recent institutional transition.

“The collaboration between Indonesia and UNEP represents a strategic step to enhance global action in forest protection, climate change mitigation, and community empowerment for forest-dependent populations,” Marzuki stated.

The Vice Minister highlighted three current priority areas for the Ministry of Forestry: strengthening forest and land fire prevention, advancing multi-forestry business models, and accelerating the recognition and empowerment of social forestry and customary forests.

He also reaffirmed that the Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 remains a national strategic agenda aimed at achieving net-zero emissions in the forestry sector by 2030.

In the discussions, Marzuki requested UNEP’s continued support in implementing the FOLU Net Sink 2030 program, particularly in forest and peatland restoration, enhancing the Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system, strengthening social and environmental safeguards, and developing innovative financing mechanisms to support the REDD+ framework (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).

Indonesia also presented its vision to position itself as a global hub for sustainable carbon markets, leveraging its vast tropical forest potential as a cornerstone for innovation, knowledge exchange, and green investment.

The Vice Minister further highlighted the critical role of the International Tropical Peatlands Center (ITPC) in advancing carbon accounting methodologies, peat fire prevention, and restoration-based livelihood models.

“We believe that the renewed partnership between Indonesia and UNEP will strengthen Indonesia’s leadership in global climate action while ensuring fair and sustainable forest governance,” Marzuki concluded.
