The Ministry of Environment and Forestry reported the birth of a Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) calf at the Elephant Training Center (PLG) of Way Kambas National Park, Lampung, on Monday, February 26, 2024.
The female elephant calf was born weighing 69 kg, with a shoulder height of 72 cm, chest circumference of 98 cm, body length of 87 cm, tail length of 50 cm, front foot circumference of 44 cm, rear foot circumference of 44 cm, and both the calf and the mother are reported to be healthy and in normal condition.
This birth marks the fourth offspring of the elephant mother Pleno, who is currently 34 years old.

At present, the mother elephant is being provided with additional food in the form of pasture grass and Vitamin injections to aid in postpartum recovery and enhance the quality of her milk.
Immediately after giving birth, the Medical Team of the Elephant Hospital at PLG – Way Kambas National Park conducted intensive care for both the calf and the mother to ensure their well-being.
With the birth of this elephant calf, it adds to the elephant population in PLG. “Hopefully, this birth will provide new inspiration for the conservation of priority wildlife and increase the Sumatran elephant population in PLG – Way Kambas National Park,” said Acting Head of the Way Kambas National Park Office, Hermawan. ***
